Tom Shales’ Feeble Attempt @ Amanpour assassination.

Is it a coincidence that just as the AIPAC conference is winding down that TV critic Tom Shales takes out his poison pen to slander Christiane Amanpour?

Let’s begin with the headline (which, in his defense, was probably written by his editor): ABC’s Choice of Amanpour for “This Week” Has Critics Inside The Network And Beyond.

Wow. Shales might man up and make his own case against the journalist. The list impugning her integrity is short, and full of the usual suspects: folks who support the Far Right wing of the Israeli government. And our own Far Right. FIN.

Opening with the first paragraph we see, “If being a moderator of “This Week,” ABC’s Sunday morning news-talk show, required Senate approval, then journalist Christiane Amanpour — recently named by ABC News President David Westin to take the job — would already be in big trouble.”

SHE’D be in big trouble? How about our Democracy? If government vetted who covered them, why it’d be like… Fox during the Bush years. But seriously, this is a specious way to begin an article, and it gets worse, folks.

Shales uses the Media Resource Center of NewsBusters, not exactly an equivalent of Media Matters for America, much this F.A.I.R, to bolster his straw man argument that Amanpour is radioactive.

I could go on, but instead I’ll encourage you to read the first page of comments on his WaPo article. As of 6pm, not a taker among them.

In labelling Amanpour as “deficient” because she doesn’t anchor domestic news coverage, Shales makes a stronger case for where he should hold forth: On sitcoms and reality shows. If that.

Don’t take MY word for it. Check it here.
